Is it safe?

Short answer…YES!! Chiropractic care has been shown to be extremely safe in studies. The long answer is that there are risks involved as there are in any treatment style. If there is anything found in the exam that suggests chiropractic treatment is not safe for you, then we will not proceed. We design the treatments to fit your individual needs and only proceed when we have reduced the risk to the absolute minimum. Surgeries and long-term medicating have been shown to have much greater risks than chiropractic treatment.

I’ve heard once you go to a chiropractor, you have to keep going forever. Is this true?

No. You don’t have to keep going forever. Once a particular complaint is treated you may choose to cease treatment and just return next time another problem arises. However, some patients learn the value of continuing what we call “maintenance care” to prevent future injuries and to keep their bodies feeling and working at their best. It’s funny that you don’t here the same complaint about the dentist or exercise, but they are analogous. You wouldn’t think of exercising and then one day saying,”That’s it, I shouldn’t have to exercise again, that ought to last me for quite a while.”

I have arthritis, so what can chiropractic do for me?

Many things. Arthritis by definition is just an inflammation of a joint. It is usually used as the common name for osteoarthritis or, less commonly, rheumatoid arthritis. Usually there are bony changes to the joint visible on an x-ray. Do not be fooled into thinking that just because there are bony changes that there is nothing that can be done for you. Adjusting of arthritic joints can ease discomfort and increase motion so that you can enjoy life a little more. There is also no greater increase in the risk of adjusting because we will adapt the adjusting style to suit your individual needs. In fact, it’s far less risky than continuing to take anti-inflammatory medication whose long-term use has very well known negative side effects.

Who is Johnnie Walker?

Dr Johnnie Walker has been in private practice for 9+ years at East York Chiropractic Clinic. He is a native of Chile but immigrated to Canada at an early age. He believes in the body’s innate ability to heal and regulate itself and that chiropractic can help the body work without interference. He works in a style that combines working the soft tissue of the body that surrounds the joints and then delivering the adjustment. He tries to educate his patients so that they feel involved in the healing process and they can better understand what the treatment is doing for them.
